The author considers the effects of wartime change on political and social developments, and thereafter focuses on three main areas of government policy - labour and industrial relations; reconstruction and social reform; and external relations (including Ireland and the Empire). Other aspects which are assessed are the political alternatives to the Coalition, and the roots of its downfall. In the conclusion some attempt is made to examine the legacy of the Coalition for later British history, with comparative reference to the histories of other European nations and of the United States." -- |
