VOL.278(37) Practical consequences likely to result from a repeal of the corn laws: these consequences being the reduction of farmers to the condition of bailiffs or tenants. The reduction of peasants or labourers generally to the condition of the ill-clothed and worse-fed labourers of some other countries. The reduction of the national income to such an extent as to render impossible the discharge of the national obligations. Exhibited in a speech, delivered by the Rev. J.H. Thomas, B.A. at a meeting held in Devonport, in reply to Mr. Bright, advocate of the Anti-Corn-Law League; to which is appended an enquiry into some of the causes of the present distress. Published by request, and addressed especially to the farmers and labouring classes, by their real friends.
